1/10-1/16 CBJ Prospects Week in Review

Hello CBJ faithful time again for the week in review. Last week was a rough one for the future Jackets with only 4 of the 17 teams going without a loss. Mathieu Corbeil made his debut with the Saint John Sea Dogs making 15 saves and 2 more in a shootout to earn the victory. Now from those numbers you can see Mathieu had a light night especially when across the rink the Rocket’s goalie faced 67 shots for the game. That’s not a typo folks, P.E.I’s goalie probably needed oxygen in between periods while Corbeil was playing cards with the mascot at points of the game. In the Dogs other game it was another overtime affair but it ended in a loss with Corbeil making 27 saves. It was another fought week for Austin Madaisky and the Kamloops Blazers going 0-3 this week, the team is in the midst of a 4 game losing streak. Madaisky tied Dalton Prout as the leading goal scoring for defenseman in the Blue Jackets organization with 8 in a game against Ryan Johansen and the Portland Winterhawks. Madaisky ended the week with 1 goal and being a +1 with 4 penalty minutes. The Portland Winterhawks have lost 6 of their last 10, this from a team that took 30 games to lose 6 games in regulation. In 3 games the Hawks went 1-2 with Johansen picking up back to back 2 point nights. I still would love to know why the Kamloops Blazers and the Portland Winterhawks don’t like each other because  in 4 games this year the teams have combined for 40 goals and 351 penalty minutes. Oliver Gabriel picked up 2 assists in Saturday’s win over the Blazers matching Johansen in points but the Johan had a goal and an assist. What a difference a trade deadline will make last week Brandon Archibald and Dalton Prout were on teams in the middle of losing streaks, now with the Saginaw Spirit the team is on 6 game winning streak. Prout was named an assistant captain just days after being acquired and picked up his 8th goal of the season he was a +3 and got in a fight. A local twitter feed had a great quote from Spirit GM/coach Todd Watson on Prout wearing 55(he wore 5 in Barrie) “That’s a linebacker number and that’s what he is.” Archibald went scoreless and was a +1 with 2 penalty minutes last week. Dalton Smith almost went 3 for 3 this week in getting in a fight in each game but decided to pick up an assist in last night’s loss to the top team in the OHL. The 67’s went 0-3 last week, the 3 straight losses are the teams longest losing streak of the year. Petr Straka earned his 9th assist of the season and was a +2 with 2 penalty minutes in the Oceanic’s 2 games last week getting a win and a loss.

A rough season continued for the Colgate Red Raiders and defenseman Thomas Larkin. The Raiders lost both games this weekend and have lost 9 of its last 10 with 4 going to overtime. Larkin had no points with 2 penalty minutes and was even, Larkin had 19 points as a freshman last season has only 6 this year but has a new career high in goals with 4. Cornell earned a split this weekend defeating RPI before losing to one of the top teams in the ECAC. The Big Red handed the Engineers there worst defeat of the season scoring 5 goals on CBJ prospect Allen York a goalie who hadnt allowed more than 4 all season, CBJ prospect Sean Collins had no points this weekend. Allen York’s weekend featured 2 matchups with Blue Jackets prospects playing Cornell on Friday losing 5-1 the first time York had been pulled this season. He then bounced back making 28 saves defeating Colgate on a penalty shot in overtime by leading scorer Chase Polacek, York is 12-6-3 with a 1.98 GAA. Martin Ouelette got his 3rd win of the season on Friday only facing 14 shots in an overtime win over Providence. Maine also played Boston College defeating the Eagles 4-1, Oueltte did not play. Jackets prospect Cam Atkinson scored the Eagle’s only goal in the loss, the goal was Atkinson’s team leading 17th. Miami earned a sweep over in state rival Bowling Green neither CBJ prospect had a point in Friday’s win but had it ot been for sophomore Reilly Smith’s 3 point night it would of been the Trent Vogelhuber show. Vogelhuber had a goal and a assist in Saturday’s 3-1 win including the game winner giving him his second multi-point game of the year. Defenseman Will Weber had no points and was even with 2 penalty minutes on the weekend. Michigan also had a series with an in state rival having a home and home with Ferris State. Friday it was close, Saturday was an all out demolishing handing the Bulldogs its worst defeat of the season. Matt Rust had an assist in each game giving him 14 on the year tied for second on the team. Kevin Lynch went scoreless again this weekend he also had 4 penalty minutes, Lynch hasnt earned a point in 11 games. Jake Hansen scored his 6th goal  of the season, 4 of them being on the power play good for second on the team in Friday’s win over rival North Dakota. Hansen had no points in Saturday night’s loss to the Fighting Sioux. Drew Olsen and Minnesota-Duluth had a series with Wisconsin earning a split. The Bulldogs loss on Saturday ended a 4 game winning streak 1 being an exhibition with the US u-18 team. Olsen had no points last weekend, the sophomore has only 1 assist on the season and hasnt scored since mid November. The Springfield Falcon went 0-3 this weekend getting outscored 13-5. Falcon’s captain Ben Guite was the only Falcon with multiple points with a goal and an assist, giving him 6 goals and 15 assists. His 15 assists is tied for the team lead with Dane Byers and Trevor Frischmon but Byers earned 6 of his while with the Hartford Wolfpack/Connecticut (Fail)Whale, Gustaf Wesslau started 2 of the 3 games. In 3 games this week the Fort Wayne Komets went 2-0-1 with Chris Francis getting 2 assists giving him13 on the year to go along with 4 goals. 9 of Francis’s 13 points have come on the power play.

Next week’s featured action is a home and home between Colgate and Cornell another game to watch for is a game that all 3 Jacket’s OHL prospects will be in action against each other as Dalton Smith and the Ottawa 67’s host Brandon Archibald, Dalton Prout and the rest of the Saginaw Spirit. As always I thank you reading this and will talk to you again next week, as always follow @CBJProspects for the latest update on all these guys.
