Where there’s smoke, there actually was fire this time. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson announced today that the club has traded left wing Jason Chimera to the Washington Capitals for defenseman Milan Jurcina and right wing Chris Clark. “We are pleased to add Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina to our hockey club. Both are veteran players who we believe will contribute significantly to our team,” Howson said.

This moves follows a rumor-laden day that linked the Blue Jackets with other Capitals blueliners Shaone Morrisonn and Karl Alzner as well as the likes of Toronto and Ottawa as potential trade partners. This appears to be a very sound deal for the Union Blue and one that confirms Ken Hitchcock will not be leaving before the Olympic break.

At 6’4” and 240lbs Milan Jurcina adds some serious size to the Union Blueline. The native of Slovakia has registered 14-36-50 and a +8 rating in 302 career games with the Bruins and Capitals. He also adds a very heavy right-handed shot to the Columbus back end. The bad: Jurcina has been characterized as inconsistent his entire career, is prone to mistakes in his own end and is a below average skater. The good: his $1.37million contract is up at the end of the season so if he doesn’t play well, he can be off the books this summer.

Clark, 33, was the Capitals captain and a very capable checking line right winger. He’s just the kind of player Hitchcock covets in his locker room: solid two-ways, tough on the boards and in front of the net. He’s got over 500 games under his belt, a feet only three other Jackets, Sammy Pahlsson, Kristian Huselius and Fredrick Modin have reached. He’ll be brought in with hopes that he might be able to serve in a sort of Michael Peca role. He’s a vocal leader and he’ll hopefully be able to help translate Hitchcock for the younger players and bet them bought into Hitch-hockey. He’s under contract through next season at $2.65million.

Jason Chimera will be missed by many in the Blue Jackets locker room and in the stands. He’s one of the longest tenured players in team history, with 331 games with club to his name. He put up 62-74-137 over four plus seasons with the Blue Jackets. He was acquired by Doug MacLean on October 8, 2005 the day after an opening night loss, for fan favorite Geoff Sanderson. He quickly endeared himself to the Blue Jackets fans and the Columbus community for his dedication on the ice and charitable work off it. “We’d also like to thank Jason Chimera for his contributions to the Blue Jackets organization both on and off the ice over the past four-plus seasons,” Howson said in a club statement. He’ll be sure to receive a standing-ovation when the Capitals come to town in April.

This is an interesting move for the Jackets, who take on the Red Wings tonight in Nationwide Arena. Neither player will be in the line-up but will be expected to debut New Years Eve against Nashville. It’s not a blockbuster deal but Scott Howson’s known for doing well and sometimes finding gems in low-key trades like this. The team needed some sort of spark, nearly all other options have been exhausted. Only time will tell.

Monday marked the beginning of development camp for the Columbus Blue Jackets. About 35 players attended in all, including draft picks from ’06 to ’09, as well as many free agents that were invited to participate.

The camp is open to the public, and although the ice was crowded with players and coaches, much attention was focused on the Jacket’s 2009 first round pick John Moore.

Throughout the first two days of camp, Moore has been frequently positioned along side Notre Dame product Theo Ruth, who was acquired during the ’07-’08 season from the Washington Capitals in exchange for veteran Sergei Fedorov. So far, the two have looked good together, creating numerous chances in front of the net and playing fast shutdown defense.

“It’s exciting. I need to work that much harder every day”, Moore said. “Right now that’s my biggest goal, to get bigger and stronger and hopefully be a part of that moving forward.”

“We all love his attitude and disposition,” head coach Ken Hitchcock said about Moore. “His foot speed gets him out of so much trouble all the time. He’s able to get up the ice; he can maneuver away from people.”

Five of the six Jackets draftees at the 2009 draft were present on Tuesday. Sixth round pick Anton Blomqvist of Sweden was the only one that did not participate.

New goaltending coach Dave Rook was also present at camp working with goalies Kevin Lalande and Allen York. Rook spent the draft weekend with his former team, the St. Louis Blues, before being allowed begin work with the Jackets.

Lalande, who was acquired from Calgary at the March 4th trade deadline last season, was very impressive in his time with Syracuse posting a 2.27 GAA and a .927 save percentage. He and Dan LaCosta will likely compete for the third goalie spot on the roster in the upcoming year.

Although many of the guys have looked good so far, development coach Tyler Wright says they still have a few things to learn.

“These kids are all young, they’re all naive,” Wright said. “They have an understanding that they think they’re ready for the NHL and what it takes. When you get it in their mind that you have to multiply that by about 100, then they’ll figure it out.”

Another story that arose during camp was the exclusion of Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger from the list of players invited to U.S. Olympic hockey orientation camp in August. The list includes 19 forwards, many of which, appear to be less qualified than Umberger.

“For him not to be in a group that big…I disagree with it,” Blue Jackets General Manager Scott Howson said.

Although he was not included on the original list, it is still a possibility he could receive an invite as the games approach come November or December.

“It’s something you dream of, representing your country in the Olympics,” Umberger said. “I would definitely go if I were asked.”

In other news, the Crunch recently signed forward Brock McBride. The 22-year-old enforcer played eight games last season for AHL Hartford notching four assists.

On November 29th, I wrote the following in this blog:

No guarantees, but mark this date down as the day the Jackets became a team, found some identity, and took a big step forward. Bravo!!!

The context of that quote was a 3 – 0 victory over the Washington Capitals at Nationwide Arena, against a Caps team that was decimated by injuries, in which Nash, Mason and Hejda were the 3 stars, and after which I declared that Mason was the starting goaltender, period.

Fast forward to tonight, when the Jackets pulled out their mirror and provided a bookend 3 -0 shutout of the Washington Capitals. However, this time it was on the road, at the end of a brutal 6 game coast-to-coast trek, and we were the team burden by injuries. Mason and Hejda were again stars, but there was no Nash to help them. Instead, Voracek, Filatov, Umberger, Tyutin, Boll, etc. came to the rescue for one of the most improbable wins in Bluejackets history.

As Hitchcock said after the game “I wouldn’t want to play this club [the Capitals] again with this lineup.” But looking at his face, both during the post-game press conference and on the bench as the clock wound down, you could tell that the quality of the effort he had just witnessed touched him in a way that we who are not part of that fraternity cannot understand.

We combined effort, good fortune, skill and guts to forge a win that evolved slowly but distinctly over three periods. We were horribly outplayed in the first period, but Mason stood tall, gave us hope, and the Voracek – Umberger tandem gave us a tenuous lead. The second period, customarily not a good one for us, found us asserting ourselves, creating space, depriving chances and giving Tyutin and MacDonald time to team up on another goal. Finally, we maintained composure in the third and Boll brought home a clinching power play goal in poetic justice, after the Caps earned a double minor borne of frustration. In between, there were Capitals shots bouncing off posts and crossbars, but more often caroming off of Mason harmlessly to the corner. He was other worldly.

+/- for the game:

+ Mason — I hope that each member of the NHL All Star Game selection committee receives a DVD of this game. In the highly possible event that Luongo cannot start (and if I am a Vancouver exec, there is no way I let him go), then Mason should get the nod. Due to his age, and the fact that he is a Bluejacket and not a Blackhawk, it will likely be Kiprusoff, but we can hope. Too many highlight reel saves to count. His effort in the first period enabled a fidgety corps of forwards to find their legs and their confidence.

+ Special Teams — When we had to have it, we got it. 2 for 6 on the power play, and a perfect penalty kill, including 40 seconds of 5 on 3. I can’t think of a much scarier scenario than a 5 vs. 3 with Ovechkin one of the 5.

+ Opportunism — We were grossly outshot– 45 to 23, but cashed in on our opportunities for the most part. A couple of open nets early on escaped unscathed, but otherwise we took advantage of the opportunities we had.

+ Competetive Composure — We took a clue from Mason, and kept our cool, were persistent, and played smart. Kudos to Boll for not dropping the gloves in the 3rd, and we were rewarded with a double minor that Boll cashed in for us. Nice!

+ Individuals — Mason, Tyutin, Voracek, Filatov, Hejda, Umberger, Murray (not necessarily in that order). Could name the whole team, but these guys stood out. Once he got his legs, Filatov showed nice hustle and kept the puck moving on the power play and in their zone. Boll played the most controlled game of his career. Voracek was huge, as were Murray and Tyutin.

- Penalties — A bit of a nitpick here, but we gave up 6 power plays to a team that you really do not want to do that with. However, see the next -

- Officiating — Need to pull out the eye chart with the big E for this crew. A phantom tripping call went against us, and they missed a blatant offsides call that almost cost us a goal. Brashear should have gotten a major and a game misconduct. Good job not tagging Boll, and actually calling the cross check after the whistle against Picard.

Beating the Caps at home for only their 2nd (yes, 2nd) regulation home loss this season is an accomplishment for any team. Shutting them out — twice — in the same season is unbelievable. Doing it with a 20 year old rookie goalie and a lineup of more AHL players than NHL — priceless!!!

Go Jackets!!!

As the season progresses, keep 9:34 PM EST on November 29 in the back of your mind. That was the time that the CBJ closed out a magnificent 3 -0 victory over the Washington Capitals, but more importantly, it signified several important milestones:

1. A Complete Effort — 60 minutes of hard charging, smart, tough hockey. No scrambling, no big blocks of time where we fell asleep. Stifling defense, lots of motion in the offense.

2. A Team Effort — While Nash, Mason and Hejda received the stars, this was a victory shared by virtually the whole team. Torres, Murray, Malhotra, Modin, Chimera all played hard nosed, hustling hockey at both ends of the ice. Commodore, Russel, Tyutin were all huge and Backman showed more. We supported in all zones, and played with a calmness that we have not yet seen.

3. A Display of Character – Less than 24 hours after a gut wrenching loss that would have sent us into a tailspin in years past, we came back against a hot, tough opponent, and not only won, but dominated throughout the game. A lot of guys grew up in the last 24 hours, and it showed tonight.

4. A New #1 — Forget the politically correct sound bites for the media — Mason is the #1 goalie, at least for now. He stared down Ovechkin and came out on top several times, three during a brief 2nd period flurry for the Caps. His calmness and focus are what we need right now. Let’s be honest — Mason will have some bad runs, and Pazzy will get over his current bad run. No need call for Leclaire to be run out of town, or to put Mason on the pedestal. We are fortunate to be in this situation, where Pazzy has time to work through this bad spell, while Mason continues to shine. Rookie of the Month for November???

No guarantees, but mark this date down as the day the Jackets became a team, found some identity, and took a big step forward. Bravo!!!
