Jan. 3-9 Prospect Week in Review

Greetings all it was another busy week for the Jackets prospects with 3 needing to fill out change of address forms. Last week I ended with the World Juniors this week i’ll start with them. Ryan Johansen and Canada played the US in a Semifinal and then faced off with international rival Russia in the gold medal game. Johansen scored his 3rd goal of the tournament in the game against the US while being a +1. Then in the gold medal game Canada got out to a 3-0 lead before the Russians roared back to win 5-3. The Russia game was the only game of the WJC that Ryan didn’t pick up a point. Johansen finished with 3 goals 6 assist for 9 points tied with team captain Ryan Ellis for 2nd on the team. All 3 goals were on the power play with 1 being a game winner, he also led the Canucks(eww sorry) in shots on goal and won the Player of the Game award and was named to the all tournament team. It was a rough tourney for Petr Straka and the Czechs, the team had to play in the regulation round to insure it made it into next years tournament. Straka earned no points in the teams win this week. Straka ended the tournament with a goal and 2 assists in 6 games with a power play goal. He also won a Player of the Game Award in the game against Canada. The award was given to him by ex CBJ analyst Danny Gare.
Now I normally keep this to our prospects but there’s a player in Springfield I hope Assistant GM Chris MacFarland is telling Scott Howson about Chris D’Alvise in 21 games with the Falcons he has 14 points including 4 last week to tie Nikita Filatov for the team lead in that span. That’s right folks Filatov erupted last week earning 4 points, 2 being goals also adding a shootout goal. The leading scorer on D was Theo Ruth who had 3 assists, Gustaf Wesslau was in net for the teams 2 wins this week stopping 73 of 78. Chris Francis picked up an assist last week as the Komets went 1-1 last week.

3 Blue Jackets prospects were traded last week just hours before there league’s trade deadline, goaltender Mathieu Corbeil and defenseman Dalton Prout were traded last week and defenseman Brandon Archibald was traded today. I hope all 3 packed oxygen cause there all are going from the bottom of there division to the top, in Corbeil’s case he goes all the way to the top of the CHL after the deals the Jackets have prospects on 4 of the BMO CHL Top 10. Mathieu Corbeil started the week on the Halifax Mooseheads a team with a 14-24-1-1 record(W-L-OTL-SL) then on Thursday, the Mooseheads and the Saint John Sea Dogs a team that was 32-5-0-2 and is the top team in Canada(coached by ex CBJ coach Gerard Gallant). Mathieu didnt play in the Mooseheads last game before the trade happened and actually his first game with the Dogs was in Halifax against his old team. Now he didnt start that game his new teammates made him feel welcome beating the Herd 9-2. This deal was a bit of a shock with Corbeil having a 7-15-0-1 record being traded for a goalie with a 14-2-0-2 record. But in an interview with a Halifax newspaper, GM Cam Russell made it sound like this was a mercy trade to get him out of Hailfax to give him a chance to succeed. Dalton Prout went from a team thats probably already wrapped up the first pick in next year’s OHL draft to competing for a shot in the Memorial Cup. There will be 2 OHL teams in the Cup this year with top OHL club Mississauga serving as the host. In Prout’s last 3 games with the Barrie Colts(8-28-2-2) the team went 1-2 with him earning an assist and 9 penalty minutes. The Saginaw Spirit(26-8-3-1) and there Stephen Colbert inspired mascot(dont believe me look it up)  traded 2 players and 2 3rd round draft picks to acquire the big Dman. The Spirit must be Blue Jackets fans cause the day after trading for Prout they acquired fellow CBJ defensive prospect Brandon Archibald. Archibald played his last 2 games with the Greyhounds losing both but Archibald picked up an assist in his final game with the club. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds(14-21-5-0) traded Archibald for CBJ rookie camp invitee Michael Kantor and multiple picks. I’d love to know what Austin Madaisky did to the Kelowna Rockets but man do they rough him up, in two meeting in the last 2 weeks Madaisky is a -7 in those games. In 3 game sthis week Madaisky picked up no points with the Blazers going 1-2. In 3 games Dalton Smith picked up a goal and a assist and 2 fights last week helping the 67′s go 3-0 last week. Petr Straka got back from the World Juniors to  go 1-2 last week with the win coming in a shootout, in his first game back Straka picked up an assist but was a -1 for the week. Ryan Johansen returned to the Winterhawks line up to help them go 2-0 last week. The team had been in a 2-4 funk ssince he left to join Team Canada. In 2 games this week Johansen and Oliver Oliver Gabriel both picked up a goal and a assist last week. Gabriel’s goal was shorthanded, he also picked up a game misconduct in Friday’s win. Me and my big tweets on Saturday I commented that Cam Atkinson was on a 8 game scoring streak after scoring a goal Friday night he was then held scoreless for the first time since before Thanksgiving. His 16 goals ties him for 2nd in the nation. Colgate’s rough season continued with the Red Raiders getting losing both games this weekend stretching their losing streak to 7. Thomas Larkin went without a point and was even on the weekend even thought he had to play as a forward on Friday. Sean Collins and Cornell went 2-0 this week with Collins scoring his 2nd goal of the year on Friday. The Miami Redhawks were in Columbus last week to play the Ohio State and the Buckeyes continued its winning ways sweeping the Redhawks, the 2 CBJ prospects went scoreless. Matt Rust earned an assist on Friday night to give him 100 points for his career(39-61-100). Kevin Lynch went scoreless in the weekend series with the Spartans. Minnesota basically had a week off playing only an exhibition with the US U-18 team, Jake Hansen did’nt play in the 9-0 blowout. Drew Olsen and Minnesota-Duluth had an early week series with Clarkson with Olsen playing in one game being a +1. UMD also played the US U-18 team but they kept it closer than the Gophers did winning 4-1. Allen York made 30 saves in an overtime loss to a probably tired Clarkson having already played Duluth on Monday and Tuesday but then rebounded making 26 saves to defeat St. Lawrence to pick up his 11th win of the season. The bubble finally burst on Martin Ouelette’s great start the freshman netminder got lit up for 3 goals on 13 shots only making it out of the first period. Not that it really mattered the #9 Black Bears got dismantled 7-1 by #17 Merrimack.

Next week, the traded players will make there debuts with there new clubs including Brandon Archibald’s first game being like Corbeil against his old teammates. The ECAC is weird and instead of playing back to backs like most college teams, they play one team Friday and another team Saturday night. Allen York and RPI’s weekend includes seeing 2 Blue Jackets prospects playing Colgate and Cornell. As always I thank you for reading my babble week after week and feel free to follow @CBJprospects  for updates on all these guys.
