Jackets fall to Sabres

The Blue Jacket’s record went to 1-1 in the Traverse City Prospect Tournament today when they fell to the Buffalo Sabre’s prospects. The Jackets had a lot of trouble getting into the Sabre’s end and two brutal turnovers also didnt help. The game got off to a bad start when Ryan Johansen took a penalty just 19 seconds into the game but the Jackets killed it and when Lukas Sedlak took another penalty just two minutes after Johansen was called. The first goals was a ugly one and the second was a wrap around that dribbled through Mthieu Corbeil’s pads. After the Sabre’s second goal Dalton Smith decided to drop the mitts with Shawn Szydlowski in what we called a draw.
In the second Boone Jenner scored on a rebound of a David Savard shot to make it 2-1. Just a minute thirty five later Cody Goloubef scored off a feed from Johansen and Savard scored on the power play. While the second period was better it was a bit rough for the Jackets because on back to back shiftsmore on teammates would collide. Austin Madaisky was inserted into the line up and showed hes a complete defenseman showing a good skating ability when he carried the puck down the ice and his physical play when he got away with a high stick on a check when he checked a Sabres prospect probably loosening a few teeth, hit was behind the play but that wasnt he hit of the night but more on that later. Mathieu Corbeil had some troble in the second when a Sabres player somehow forced his blocker off and to drop his stick luckily his teammates quickly got it out of the zone before he had to try and make a save. Now I try to be positive but I have to be a little negative, Cody Goloubef should of recieved an assist on Shawn Szydlowski’s second period goal caused he served it up to him on a silver platter right in the slot. Mike Thomas recieved a elbowing call on what looked like a clean hit to me and during the power play Mathieu Corbeil literally got saved by the bell or buzzer because of a scramble in front of the net.
Just 10 seconds in another turnover led to a goal when John Moore gave the puck up and two passes later the puck was in the back of the net courtesy of last season’s AHL Rookie of the Year Luke Adam. Cam Atkinson scored his first of the tournament when he tapped it in during a scramble in front of the net. Mathieu Corbeil needs to work on his rebound control a few times today he was fine and his teammates would help him out but twice it bit him including the goal that made it 5-3. I can’t remember the sixth goal off the top of my head sorry follks. The hit of the game and tournament so far for the Jackets goes to Dalton Prout who demolished the Sabre’s Daniel Catenacci and before any Sabres could retaliate the buzzer sounded. If I remember right Prout had the best hit last year when he checked the helmet off a Rangers(I think) player. The tournament takes a break tomorrow and is only a practice day then on Tuesday the Jacket will play the Wild.
Player Thoughts: Mike Thomas was looking for a piece of anything wearing yellow and blue laying some big hits while absorbing a few as well. It sorta seems to me that Cam Atkinson all 5’7″ of him is a bit more aggressive on the penalty kill then on 5 on 5 but Cam did have a few good shots even one he just missed from what looks like his favorite spot going off the highlights ive seen. Boone Jenner seemed to be a little more physical today.
