Recap: Columbus Vs Nashville (1/26/2010)

On Tuesday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets edged divisional foe Nashville 3-2. After a scoreless first period, Derick Brassard got the scoring started with his seventh goal of the season. Milan Jurcina and R.J. Umberger were awarded assists on the goal. That proved to be the only second period goal. The offensive outburst in the third period started eight minutes in as Kristian Huselius scored his 16th goal of the season, on the power play. Fredrik Modin added a goal just 39 seconds later to put the Blue Jackets comfortably in command. Nashville made things interesting, scoring the final two goals of the game, 10:06 in and 15:36 in, but Columbus’ defense prevailed.

Steve Mason saved 29 of 31 shots on goal to pick up his 12th win of the season. The 21 year old from Oakville Ontario had lost seven of his last eight starts coming in. Nashville’s two goals were scored by Martin Erat and Patric Hornqvist. For Hornqvist, it was his 21st of the season.

The win for the Blue Jackets pushed them to 21-25-9 on the season, while the Predators fell to 29-20-3. Columbus sits just ahead of Edmonton in the Western Conference standings, but trails both Minnesota and St. Louis by just three points. Nashville sits two points back of Los Angeles, for seventh place in the conference; two points ahead of Detroit. The Blue Jackets will now stay at home and host the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night, before heading on the road to both St. Louis and Colorado. Nashville, who has now lost four straight games, will finish their four game road trip on Friday in Detroit, and follow that up with a home game against Atlanta on Saturday night.

The team had some very good movement on the power play but wouldn't pull the trigger. Defensive zone break down towards the end and a lot of scampering around especially with the goalie pulled.

Brassard was due on that goal. He created so many scoring chances but wasn't finishing. Very solid overall game and he's getting top 6 minutes.

The Russell and Jurcina pair is getting prettay prettay good. It seems like whenever Russ gets the puck he skates it in below the hash marks and creates a chance. Jurcina holds everything down and he handles the puck well.

Mase looked great at times and as a whole his positioning was excellent. Both of those goals are pretty much impossible to stop. Martin Erat can shoot it through swiss cheese .

Modin showed a lot of grit. Overall good outing from the boys.
