According to Scott Howson, Derek Brassard will have season-ending surgery in early January, which will put him on the shelf for 4 to 6 months. (Closer to 6, according to Howson)A damn shame, given how brilliantly he had emerged as a top front liner for us, and the fact that he had a real shot [...]

A native of the SF Bay Area, my first exposure to hockey was the SF/Oakland/California Golden Seals, including Charlie Finley and the white skates. Fast forward to the late 1980's when Gretzky and the Kings came up to the Bay Area for an exhibition game at the Oakland Coliseum Arena, for which we had glass seats. I was at the first San Jose Sharks game in the Cow Palace, and followed them for their first few pathetic years, before moving to Columbus in 1994. I attended the first pro-NHL rally downtown, and have been a season ticket holder since Day 1, wife & I are active in the Jacket Backers, and son is an avid fan as well. I cover the Jackets for Inside Hockey, and contribute regularly to a variety of hockey sites. I maintain contact with the Jackets organization, and like to dig into stories, bringing a fresh, and sometimes irreverent perspective to hockey.

Brassard Surgery–As reported on Puck-Rakers, Brassard is likely headed to surgery, after MRI results showed more significant damage than hoped, and in a bad location in terms of recurrence. Hate to see it, but let’s get him fixed up right so that he has lots of years in front of him. The young man is [...]
December 22nd, 2008 | Jeff Little | 0 comments | ContinuedGame Effort, But No Breaks
The Jackets put on a game effort tonight, but were just too wounded to bring it home. As Mason has done for us in several games, Bryzgalov won the game for Phoenix tonight. We out shot, out passed, out played Phoenix everywhere except on the scoreboard. Killed them in the faceoff circle, pretty much a [...]
December 21st, 2008 | Jeff Little | 1 comment | ContinuedCampbell Speaks
As reported on Puck-Rakers, Colin Campbell spoke with the Dispatch about the fiasco in overtime of the Dallas game. Here are the quotes attributed to Campbell:I’ve talked with (president) Mike Priest and (general manager) Scott Howson a few times. I’ve talked to the whole group there in Columbus. I know they’re mad about this. I [...]

Per Puck-Rakers, Mike York has been recalled from Syracuse to join the club, and Clay Wilson has been returned. We need to see if Brassard formally goes on IR today, which will then put some decisions on the desks of Hitch and Howson. Complicating matters is Leclaire’s continued poor play. 6 goals last night, 5 [...]
December 19th, 2008 | Jeff Little | 1 comment | ContinuedToronto Beats Bluejackets
As Hitch said “We won the hockey game”. I agree, we beat Dallas, we just lost to Toronto. I am not a black helicopter/right wing consipiracy/alien abduction kind of guy, but Colin Campbell and Gary Bettman need to look hard at this and provide an explanation to the Columbus fans, and to hockey in general, [...]
December 19th, 2008 | Jeff Little | 0 comments | ContinuedWOW!!! Happy Birthday HItch!!!
If Hitch has a list of things he wanted for his birthday (and I doubt that he does), #1, #2 and #3 on that list would likely have been a gutty home win over the best team in Hockey, the San Jose Sharks. Well, he got his wishes . . .in spades. Make no mistake [...]

The Sharks swam into town yesterday, arriving at about 6:30 AM after a red-eye charter from the West Coast. Officially had the day off, but a few did an informal skate yesterday afternoon. Some advance thoughts before tonight’s game:Looking Ahead? David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury heads his piece on the game with “Sharks [...]

Put another one in the “Great Losing Effort” category. We skated well, had intensity (except for the early stages of the 3rd period), but lost. Missed chances, untimely penalties, and though mistakes are fewer, they invariably happen at exactly the wrong times.Make no mistake, Chicago is a very good team and they got a great [...]

Least surprising NHL news of the day is that Sean Avery will not be rejoining the Dallas Stars, despite completion of his 6 games suspension. TSN.ca reports as follows:The Stars said the team will continue to honor Avery’s contract while exploring all options for his hockey future consistent with the terms of his counseling.“We do [...]

For those wondering about the sudden emergence of the Swedish flag-toting “Dancing With The Stars” wannabe at the last two CBJ games, Tom Reed has the answer in Puck-Rakers:Huselius provided tickets to Thursday night’s game for his former personal trainer, Christian Rosen, and his brother, Johan, aka, the Deney Terrio of Stockholm. Decked out in [...]
December 14th, 2008 | Jeff Little | 0 comments | ContinuedVoted Off The Island
The boys put together a very nice, solid effort tonight in their 3 – 1 victory over the Islanders. But for an unfortunate bounce of the puck, Mason could have had his 3rd shutout of the season. As Hitch said in the Dispatch this morning, the Islanders have a diffcult style to play against, and [...]
