A native of the SF Bay Area, my first exposure to hockey was the SF/Oakland/California Golden Seals, including Charlie Finley and the white skates. Fast forward to the late 1980's when Gretzky and the Kings came up to the Bay Area for an exhibition game at the Oakland Coliseum Arena, for which we had glass seats. I was at the first San Jose Sharks game in the Cow Palace, and followed them for their first few pathetic years, before moving to Columbus in 1994. I attended the first pro-NHL rally downtown, and have been a season ticket holder since Day 1, wife & I are active in the Jacket Backers, and son is an avid fan as well. I cover the Jackets for Inside Hockey, and contribute regularly to a variety of hockey sites. I maintain contact with the Jackets organization, and like to dig into stories, bringing a fresh, and sometimes irreverent perspective to hockey.

Playoff Prospects — Where Things Stand Now, What The Schedule Holds

OK, since every pundit on the planet is weighing in on who is going to make the playoffs and who isn’t, despite the fact that everyone has between 30 and 34 games left in the season, I thought I might take my own shot at it, using some numbers to support my case. First, let’s [...]

Sometimes Stuff Just Happens . . .

Mama always said there would be days like this . . . The CBJ had just about everything go wrong tonight that could go wrong, and dropped a 7 – 3 decision to the Dallas Stars, further tightening the Western Conference playoff race. The tone was set early when Dallas gets three goals on 8 [...]

Stars On Our Turf

C After two scrappy, contentious, controversial games in Dallas, this battle comes to the Jackets home turf for the next edition. The teams have split the season series thus far, with both games requiring extra time to be decided. The Jackets won on opening day with a Rick Nash overtime goal, and later Dallas prevailed [...]

Commodore "Lays It On The Line" — TSN

In an attempt to quantify some of the intangibles that make some players so valuable, despite perhaps not showing up on the scorecard, TSN has put together a list of 75 players who meet the “lay it on the line” standard through blocked shots, hits, takeaways, faceoffs, etc. Our own Mike Commodore ranks 3rd in [...]

Not For The Faint Of Heart

Ladies & Gentlemen — if at any time during tonight’s game we should experience a loss of breathable air, a phenomenal young goalkeeper will appear in net, breathe life into everyone, and settle affairs nicely, once and for all. Thank you for listening . . . Not unexpectedly, the Ottawa Senators put up a game [...]

Senators Visit Town, THN Forecasts Calder Race

Ottawa arrives in town tonight, fresh off a win over a St. Louis team that has been playing better than its record. This is a “Watch Out!!!!” game for the Jackets, who have demonstrated the ability to play at or below the level of competition we should beat. Although Ottawa is 17-22-7 for the year, [...]

Fritsche Gone Wild!!!

TSN.ca is reporting that the Minnesota Wild have acquired former Jacket Dan Fritsche from the New York Rangers in a trade that will send defenseman Erik Reitz from Minnesota to the Big Apple. Fritsche, who had 1 goal and 4 assists for the Rangers, was placed on waivers earlier this week and cleared. It will [...]

Blue Line and Newcomer Contributions

Here is an interesting stat to show how our off-season acquisitions and Hitchcock’s tutelage have paid off. For all of last season, CBJ defensemen contributed 99 points. This year, the blue line has accounted for 85 points in only 48 games, on a pace for 145 points. Likely higher, due to early troubles getting accustomed [...]

Oh Captain, My Captain!

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. . . After all, it has been almost three weeks since a Bluejacket had a home hat trick! (And boy is it fun to write that line!!!)So, with apologies to Walt Whitman for hijacking his title to describe tonight’s game, nothing else describes it. Nash took [...]

Heading Around The Far Turn . . .

Sorry for the lapse in postings, but have been enjoying a bit of an All-Star Break myself, and have been working on a couple of long pieces that are not quite yet ready for prime time. Good time had by all at the Jacket Backers All-Star Game Watching party at the Garage Bar. Good food, [...]

Filatov To IR

The Bluejackets have placed forward Nikita Filatov on the IR list, retroactive to January 18th, per Scott Howson. No indication that this is any hint of a dire injury to Filatov. With Chimera, Novotny, Klesla all destined to return this week, this is primarily a move to clear some roster space while they decide whether to [...]
