1/17-1/23 CBJ Prospect Week in Review

Hello all back again for the prospect week in review. The Springfield Falcons went 2-2 last week with David LeNeveu earning both wins while Gustaf Wesslau suffered both losses. There was a 3 way tie for the scoring lead between Tomas Kubalik(3-1-4), Dane Byers(2-2-4) and fresh from Columbus Kyle Wilson(1-3-4). Warning to the rest of the AHL when the Blue Jackets send a player back to Springfield LOOK OUT!!. When Tom Sestito was sent he took his frustration out on opponents faces, while Kyle Wilson took it out on the scoresheet. Like I said earlier Wilson scored 4 points in 2 games including a 3 assist game last night while Byers and Kubalik played in all 4 games. The Saginaw Spirit went 1-3 last week including a loss to fellow CBJ prospect Dalton Smith and the Ottawa 67′s. Brandon Archibald earned his first points with the Spirit picking up 2 assists in Monday’s loss to in-state rival Plymouth. Dalton Prout had an assist with 9 penalty minutes and was a -4,  Archibald was -3 with 2 penalty minutes.

The Kamloops Blazers went 1-3 last week but Saturday’s loss to Vancouver really had to hurt. The Giants forgot there uniforms forcing the team to wear Blazer’s practice jerseys. Austin Madaisky had a assist and was a -5 for the week, he also 12 penalty minutes giving him 91 for the year.

The Portland Winterhawks went 4-0 and in the 4 games Johansen had 6 points(4-2-6) giving him 23-25-48 on the year. Johansen’s best night was in a 6-5 overtime win over Spokane. Johansen had 2 goals and then help set up Nino Niederreiter’s game winner, he was also named the game’s first star. Oliver Gabriel did not play this week and I can’t find out why anywhere I even asked the Hawks official twitter feed. Saint John coach Gerard Gallant has been alternating goalies all season long, this week Mathieu Corbeil’s turn only came up once. Corbeil sure liked making his new teammates earn there points in his 3 games in Saint John, all 3 have gone to overtime winning 2 , this week he made 1 start making 23 saves in the win.

Dalton Smith and the Ottawa 67′s went 1-1 this week with the win coming against the Saginaw Spirit, Smith picked up 1 assist and was named 2nd star in that game. In the team’s loss to Guelph, Smith picked up his 13th fighting major of the season. Petr Straka and the Rimouski Oceanic went 1-1 this week with Straka getting his 10th assist of the season. Cam Atkinson and the BC Eagles went 2-0 with Cam picking up 2 assists giving him 30 points on the season. In his last 10 games Atkinson has 14 points with 7 goals and 7 assists.

A battle of CBJ prospects took place in New York as Colgate and Cornell faced of in a home and home. Sean Collins had a goal and a assist in helping Cornell get a tie and a win over the Red Raiders. Collins goal was his third of the season and the first shorthanded goal of his career into an empty net. Thomas Larkin had no points and was even on the weekend for the Red Raiders who are stuck in an 11 game winless streak going 0-10-1 with 4 of the losses being in overtime. Michigan swept Alaska this weekend, the Wolverines have won have 5 in a row and 9 of its last 10. Matt Rust has been huge for the Maize and Blue lately, the senior is on a 4 game point streak and has points in 8 of the last 10 earning 10 points in that span.(1-9-10) It was another pointless weekend for Michigan sophomore Kevin Lynch, Lynch hasnt scored a point since November 20 when he scored 2 goals.

Miami traveled to East Lansing last week earning a split with the Spartans. In Friday night’s loss the Redhawks allowed the most goals they had all season losing 7-4, Will Weber had 2 assists in the loss while Vogelhuber went scoreless. Saturday the Hawks bounced back shutting out the Spartans in a 4-0 win. Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel isnt the only coach in Ohio that punishes players by scratching them, for Saturday night Miami coach Enrico Blasi benched 4 regulars including 2 assistant captains one being Blue Jackets Prospect Will Weber. Saturday night the Redhawks played with only 9 forwards dressed and Trent Voglehuber seemed to enjoy the extra ice time scoring his 6th of the season which ended up being the game winner his second of the season.

Allen York and RPI went 2-0 this week with York earning both wins giving him 14 on the season. York’s 14 wins put him 2nd behind Steve Mason in the Blue Jacket’s Organization. The Engineers who sit 5th in the ECAC (the team is 8-1-3 in non-conference)defeated both Harvard and Dartmouth pushing its home record to 10-1-0. York stopped 52 of 55 shots he face and had a 1.51 GAA on the weekend, York is 6th in the nation with a 1.93 GAA and 9th with a .927 save percentage. Drew Olsen and Minnesota-Duluth took on a…ill be nice and say struggling Michigan Tech squad sweeping the Huskies. I say struggling cause last season the Huskies led division 1 in losses with 30 and right now there on a 20 game winless streak(still feel bad about the last 2 Decembers CBJ fans?). Anyway the Bulldogs outscored the Huskies 8-0 in the weekend sweep. Drew Olsen tied his career high picking up his 2nd assist of the season and first since November 19th against Wisconsin.

As for next week the only real highlight is top prospect John Moore taking part in the AHL All-Star Game being held in Hershey, PA on the 30th and 31st. TIVO ALERT!!!! Fox Sports Ohio is carrying the Skills Competition and the game but NOT live. The Skills Competition and game will be shown the next day at Noon. So its the 31st for the skills and February 1st for the game. I see Moore competing in the hardest shot not sure about any other events. Thank you as always for reading this week in and week out(i’m sure there someone out there that does it) See you next week and as always follow @CBJprospects for updates.

I am starting to love this Dalton Prout character. It seems like he is always game for administering a good ass-kicking when it is due.
